Advertisement - Researcher or Senior Researcher

The Centre for Conflict Resolution (CCR) is an independent, non-governmental pan-African organisation, based in Cape Town, South Africa. Over the past 49 years, it has worked to promote constructive, creative, and co-operative approaches to the resolution of conflicts and the reduction of violence in Africa. CCR has produced ground-breaking research on African security and governance issues, conducted extensive capacity-building and training, and contributed to peace processes across Africa.

The Centre invites applications from suitable candidates to fill the following position:


CCR's Policy Development and Research (PDR) project seeks to contribute in critical and constructive ways to strengthening national, regional, and external efforts aimed at consolidating peacebuilding and region-building in Africa, through the convening of high-level policy seminars and the publication of academically rigorous, policy-relevant research. The Centre has wide-ranging research experience on the African Union (AU) and Africa's regional economic communities (RECs); the continent's relations with major external actors, such as the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU); and South Africa's foreign policy role, as well as key African peace, security, and governance issues.

Key responsibilities:

  • To contribute to the vision and leadership of the research cluster;
  • To develop and implement relevant research projects;
  • To contribute to the writing of funder reports;
  • To build and maintain the profile of the research cluster internally and externally; and
  • To manage the administrative and financial requirements of the research cluster.


  • PhD in Politics, International Relations, or a related field in the Social Sciences for appointment as a Senior Researcher, or
    Master's degree in Politics, International Relations, or a related field in the Social Sciences for appointment as a Researcher;
  • At least five years of work experience in the field of Social Sciences, including at least two years (in the case of Senior Researcher) and one year (in the case of Researcher) in research;
  • Sound knowledge of African politics, peace and security, political economy, and related issues;
  • Excellent writing, editing, research, and analytical skills;
  • Management and administration skills;
  • Experience of organising conferences, workshops, or seminars; and
  • Ability to work unsupervised and as part of a team.


  • Knowledge of the AU, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the Great Lakes region, rebel movements in Africa, and/or the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa);
  • National and international research networks;
  • Publishing ability; and
  • Experience of working in a non-governmental organisation (NGO).

This position may involve national and international travel.
