Bringing together about 30 critical role players, including the SADC Secretariat, the meeting sought to address in-depth the lack of participation in, and ownership of, SADC and regional integration processes among key stakeholders such as parliaments, civil society, tertiary and research institutions, the private sector, and the media. The seminar was the second in a series hosted by CCR in collaboration with the Botswana-based Strengthening the National-Regional Linkages in SADC (SNRL) Programme.

An Agenda for Civil Society: A Business Critique? Shaping South Africa's Region-Building Role

cover polbrief vol39This CCR policy brief emanates from a policy advisory group seminar held in Cape Town on 20 October 2017. The meeting sought to assess the challenges and opportunities for business and civil society in the agro-processing sector, in particular leather and leather products, in South Africa and the wider Southern and Eastern African regions, within the framework of South Africa's region-building role. The seminar provided a platform for knowledge sharing, constructive dialogue, and critical reflection among 30 diverse representatives of civil society and business stakeholders in the agro-processing sector; and key national and regional business actors, as well as emerging entrepreneurs, in the leather and leather products industries. The seminar was hosted by CCR and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) South Africa.

The Implementation Gap of the Regional Integration Agenda in SADC

The meeting reflected critically on the challenges of, and prospects for, regional integration in Southern Africa; and assessed the implementation gap of its policies and protocols for its 15 member states with a view to accelerating regional implementation of SADC's policies and protocols and to identify strategies for strengthening the capacity of national partners in furtherance of regional integration. The seminar was hosted by CCR and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) Strengthening National-Regional Linkages in SADC (SNRL) Programme in Gaborone.
