Capacity-Building and Training

Workshop participantsThrough its regional training work carried out by the Capacity-Building and Training (CBT) cluster, CCR aims to equip key African organisations and leaders — including regional economic communities, the African Union, national human rights institutions, women's groups, governments, national security institutions, religious and traditional leaders, and key civil society organisations — with the understanding, commitment, and capacity to engage in preventing, managing, and resolving conflicts, and thereby building sustainable peace.

Before conducting any interventions, CCR undertakes needs assessments and conflict sensitivity reviews to understand the situation in the countries in which it works. During the implementation of its interventions, the Centre takes findings from these assessments into account and adjusts its activities accordingly.

The envisaged outcomes of this work include:

  • The successful facilitation of peacebuilding initiatives by organisations and individuals who have been trained and capacitated by the Centre;
  • Beneficiaries of CCR's training have the skills to engage in dialogue as a tool for transforming and building relations essential for democratic political participation and peacebuilding.

Workshop participantsThe Centre seeks to achieve its outcomes through holding training and capacity-building workshops and dialogue sessions, the majority of which focus on mediation training, or other forms of conflict resolution skills training.

Mediation training involves imparting specific skills to enable third parties to manage and resolve conflicts, as well as complementary "training of trainers" (ToT) workshops to ensure the sustainability of this work.

Dialogue sessions involve conflict interventions, during which conflicts between stakeholders are directly addressed.

CCR's capacity-building and training interventions provide spaces for groups and individuals to interrogate key concerns that impact on peace and human security, including poverty.

The Centre's capacity-building and training project provides skills-training and technical support to national, regional, and continental institutions under the following four main themes:
