Capacity-Building: Conflict Intervention and Peacebuilding Support Project

Through its Conflict Intervention and Peacebuilding Support (CIPS) project, CCR seeks to strengthen the capacity of African institutions and actors through:

  • Providing training and policy development support to strengthen the capacity of civil society groups, national institutions, and regional organisations in Africa such as the African Union (AU), the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), as well as United Nations (UN) and European Union (EU) offices in Africa;
  • Informing and participating in national and regional peace initiatives;
  • Equipping and empowering key individuals and groups with the skills to manage community, political, and social conflict;
  • Promoting security in Africa through increasing the involvement and meaningful participation of women in processes of peace, security, and reconstruction;
  • Improving responses by relevant African and international actors to information generated by the Ushahidi* platform on sexual violence;
  • Contributing to efforts to strengthen Africa's capacity to combat HIV/AIDS more effectively through a focus on human and military security involving policy research and training; and
  • Developing capacity through teaching at, and recruiting two interns a year from, the University of Cape Town (UCT), the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and other South African educational institutions, to help to train the next generation of South Africans – particularly black scholars from historically-disadvantaged backgrounds – in the theory and practice of conflict management.

* Ushahidi (meaning "Testimony" in Swahili) is an open-source crowd sourcing crisis-mapping platform used to report and map sexual and gender-based violence.
